GYM TRI

Race Report…I did a GYM triathlon the other day and placed 1st! It was quite fun and a great brick workout. The distances included an 800m swim, 6 mile bike, and a 5k run. My times were a 12 flat swim, 13minute 58 second bike, and a 21 minute something 5k. When it was time for me to get up that morning I was having a bit of the pre-race jitters…didn’t think that would happen for this small event. Then it happened. I got to the pool and took my standard two Chocolate Outrage GU’s before the swim; as soon as I got in the pool and did my warm up lap, I was feeling pretty good. My plan was to take the first few laps easy to see how hard my competition was going to push it. I typically go out WAY too fast and burn myself out early. I was easily a body length ahead by the first lap and I was feeling good. It was over, I stayed strong and never burned out. I was two laps (100m) ahead by the end of the swim. NICE! After everyone was done with the swim we headed to the bike…I set mine up for optimal RPM speed. Before I knew it…we hit the button to start and I was at 150rpms. My rpm’s were anywhere from 150-183, and my heart rate was 170-180bpm. It was a good feeling to see that I had been cranking as hard as I could and not really showing any signs of slowing down. When that was over with I was several minutes ahead and really only had to run with the fastest runner. I stayed right with the lead guy on the run until after the first 1.5k and stepped up my pace…it was over 100degrees by this point. After the half way point the heat was really getting to me and I could feel my body telling me to slow down. I was starting to overheat so I poured water over my head and back. It was hot enough to completely evaporate in about 100 yards. By the end of the run I ran across the finish line in 47 minutes…it was a good day, except I still had to go to work. Thanks for tuning in…more races to come.
